Tommie Barfield Elementary School (TBE) will host an exciting event this week.  The Parent Literacy Academy will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (March 6) in the school’s cafeteria (101 Kirkwood Street, in Marco Island).  “The Night Sky” focus of the academy is for parents and students to have a fun, interactive experience as they learn about reading and writing strategies geared to increasing comprehension and clear writing skills.

The evening will begin with a light dinner, available for purchase by parents and family members.  It is recommended that you place your order ahead of time with the school office or via flyers that will be sent home. While enjoying dinner, participants will be introduced to the Common Core Curriculum, learn about the evening’s events, and take part in a book raffle. Parents and students will then have the opportunity to attend a session on age-specific literacy activities. The terrific teachers at TBE are looking forward to engaging parents and students with interactive literacy strategies they can continue to use at home. To stimulate our curiosity about space, Charlie Paul, a member of the Everglades Astronomical Society, will give presentations about the night sky.

To culminate the evening, participants will have an opportunity to gaze into the night sky through telescope lenses and, with clear skies, see the planets and their moons.  The Everglades Astronomical Society is graciously providing this stellar experience for TBE students, parents, and staff. The science, reading, and writing opportunities are as limitless as the number of stars in the night sky!
