OSCEOLA ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
BID FAREWELL TO TRAVELMATES
September 14, 2012
Imagine visiting New York or China, or maybe The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Now, picture doing this without leaving the comfort of your desk! That’s just what students at Osceola Elementary School (OES) are getting ready to do. Students in three 2nd grade classes at OES will be celebrating the departure of their Travelmates at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, September 21st, during a Bon Voyage party at the school (5770 Osceola Trail). The party is planned for students to say “good bye” to the teddy bears they have been preparing for world travel.
The teddy bears, known as Travelmates, will be the children’s eyes and ears for learning as the furry friends visit different states, countries, landmarks, and landforms around the globe. During the celebration, which will include cake and punch, OES Principal Jody Moorhead will give a farewell address and lead students and bears on a parade around the courtyard. The festivities will conclude as students bid their bears farewell with birdseed – a sign of good luck – as they are escorted towards their travels. Northern Trust Bank, graciously collaborating with OES on this global adventure, will take the 54 bears and facilitate their disbursal to interested travelers.
The students will be learning geography, vocabulary, world cultures, and history, based on the locations their Travelmates visit. The participating travelers will send postcards from the destinations the bears visit and write about their adventures in the bear’s journal. The postcards will be used for students to map the location of the bears and research the states or countries visited.
Travelmates are available to people who wish to participate in the program. If you would like to have one of these small teddy bears to take along on your travels, they will be available at the following Northern Trust Bank locations: 375 5th Avenue South and 4001 Tamiami Trail North.
